When I recently found a Dash My Mug ice cream maker on sale, I decided to purchase it and do some experimenting.

To be honest, I was a little skeptical that it would work well.

But after making a few varieties, I have to say that it worked surprisingly well! I’ve been very pleased with the results.

I love chocolate ice creams, so I knew that would be one of the first varieties I would make.

The result was a rich and creamy soft-serve ice cream, which exceeded my expectations!

Using the Dash Ice Cream Maker

Traditional ice cream makers rely on a bowl, which has to be frozen for at least 24 hours prior to using.

Then you prepare a liquid ice cream base, which gets poured into the frozen bowl while a “dasher” paddle churns the liquid.

As the liquid passes along the cold bowl, it freezes and turns into ice cream.

When the ice cream is first churned, it’s the consistency of soft serve.

You can enjoy it at that stage, or you can transfer it to a container and freeze it if you prefer a more solid texture.

I’ve had a KitchenAid ice cream maker for years, and that’s exactly how it works.

The Dash My Mug ice cream maker follows the same principles, only in miniature!

The “mug” is actually a bowl, which you’ll have to freeze for 24 hours.

Then it has a lid that attaches to the bowl. The lid powers the dasher, which churns the ice cream liquid as you pour it in.

You’ll end up with a small batch of delicious soft-serve ice cream!

How to Make Chocolate Ice Cream in the Dash Ice Cream Maker

It’s easier than you think to whip up a batch of this creamy treat.

Ingredients You’ll Need:

  • Milk (I used 2%)
  • Sugar (or monkfruit sweetener)
  • Cocoa powder
  • Heavy cream
  • Vanilla extract
  • Salt

How to Make it:

(Full printable recipe card is available below)

Dissolve sugar and cocoa powder. In a small mixing bowl or large liquid measuring cup, combine the milk, sugar (or monk fruit sweetener), and cocoa powder.

Whisk well to combine until smooth. This may take a minute or two, because of the cocoa powder. Just keep stirring!

Add remaining ingredients. Stir in the heavy cream, vanilla extract, and salt, until fully incorporated.

You’ll end up with a little less than one cup of liquid.

Churn. Remove the My Mug bowl from the freezer.

Attach the dasher paddle to the lid, then lock the lid into place on the bowl.

Press the power button. As the dasher is spinning, slowly pour the chocolate mixture through the pour hole, into the frozen bowl.

Allow the mixture to churn for about 20 minutes. Remove lid from the mug and serve!

Notes and Adaptations:

  • The resulting ice cream will be like a soft-serve ice cream’s consistency. Enjoy as-is, or pop the mug into the freezer for a couple of hours to solidify further to a more scoopable texture.
  • If you’d like to add mix-ins, you can do that during the last bit of churning. Simply drop pieces through the pour hole and churn to incorporate. Chocolate chips or cookie pieces would be delicious!
  • If you have the larger Dash My Pint machine, you should be able to simply double the recipe ingredients and churn for 20-30 minutes.
