A couple of months ago, I purchased a Dash “My Mug” ice cream maker on sale, mostly out of curiosity.

I wasn’t totally convinced that it would work very well, but I thought it was worth a try.

After making a few different flavors of ice cream, I have to say that I was very pleasantly surprised!

This tiny little machine churns ice cream into a creamy soft-serve that’s perfect for one or two people.

In less than 30 minutes, and with a few simple ingredients, you can be enjoying homemade Dash My Mug strawberry ice cream–and my, is it good!

And since it’s a small batch ice cream, it’s perfect for satisfying cravings without keeping a whole quart of ice cream on hand.

Using the Dash Ice Cream Maker

Most traditional ice cream machines use a bowl, which typically has to be frozen for at least 24 hours prior to using.

You then prepare an ice cream base, which gets poured into the frozen bowl while a “dasher” paddle churns the base.

As the liquid passes against the sides of the cold bowl, it begins to freeze, turning into ice cream.

This creates an ice cream with a soft-serve consistency.

You can enjoy it at that stage, or you can pour it into a freezer-safe container and freeze it for a few hours if you want a more scoopable, solid texture.

I’ve had a KitchenAid ice cream maker for years, and that’s exactly how it works.

The Dash My Mug ice cream maker follows the same principles, only in miniature!

The “mug” is actually the bowl of the apparatus, which you’ll have to freeze for 24 hours.

The lid that attaches to the bowl powers the dasher, churning the ice cream base as you pour it in.

You’ll end up with a small batch of mouthwatering ice cream!

How to Make Strawberry Ice Cream in the Dash Ice Cream Maker

It’s super simple to whip up this tasty treat.

Ingredients You’ll Need:

  • Fresh strawberries
  • Sugar
  • Milk
  • Heavy cream

How to Make it:

(Full printable recipe card is available below)

Macerate the berries. To start, you’ll want to combine sliced strawberries with some sugar in a small bowl or blender jar.

Stir together and let sit for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.

The strawberries will release their juices, creating a sweet, syrupy liquid.

Blend the base. Use a small blender (or an immersion blender) to blend the milk and strawberries (and their juices) together until smooth.

Add cream. Stir in the heavy cream to incorporate.

I also like to transfer the mixture to a spouted measuring cup at this point, which makes it easier to pour.

Churn. Remove the My Mug bowl from the freezer.

Attach the dasher paddle to the lid, then secure the lid into place on the mug.

Press the power button to turn on the dasher. As it’s spinning, slowly pour the strawberry mixture through the pour hole, into the frozen bowl.

Allow the mixture to churn for about 20 minutes. Remove lid from the mug and serve!

Notes and Adaptations:

  • The resulting ice cream will be the consistency of a soft-serve ice cream. Enjoy as-is, or pop the mug into the freezer for a couple of hours to solidify further to a more scoopable texture.
  • If you’d like to add mix-ins, you can do that during the last bit of churning. Simply drop pieces through the pour hole and churn to incorporate. Chocolate chips would be delicious!
  • If you have the larger Dash My Pint machine, you should be able to simply double the recipe ingredients and churn for 20-30 minutes.
